Black Maternity Wellness Collective
through Long Island Doula association, Inc
The Black Maternity Wellness Collective (BMWC) works to eliminate discrimination in maternity care for black pregnant families. Our goal is to help families gain access to the care and support they need during their pregnancies and provide them with evidence based information so they can make healthy decisions for themselves. Financial assistance through our "Families in Crisis" Fund is available if you qualify.
What is a doula anyway?
a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.
Simply put, a doula is someone who "mothers the mother"
What do birth doulas offer?
Suggest position changes, offer comfort measures, healthy breath control and/or hands on comforting touch.
Doulas help families to feel supported by helping to create a space where you are confident in your choices for your labor and birth. Whether a birth is completely unmedicated or medically very complex.
Whether it’s a partner, a friend or another family member, the birth partner’s experience matters at your birth. Our doulas are there to support the birth team in being as involved as they’d like with the birth.
